Spanish police have smashed a pedophile ring with the arrest of 18 people accused of sexually abusing children and distributing the images via the Internet, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
It was the first time Spanish police had broken a pedophile network which recorded its own pornography, the ministry said.
The operation began when a mother alerted police after a stranger contacted her 12-year-old son via the Internet and offered him gifts and money in return for sex.
A 29-year-old man from the southeast province of Murcia was arrested in September in a Madrid hotel when he tried to meet the child.
Police seized a large amount of child pornography and contact details for other suspected pedophiles, who they were able to detain in the following two months in possession of more material.
The arrests were made in Madrid, Barcelona, Badajoz, Valencia, Granada, Murcia, Santander, La Coruna and Cordoba.
In November, 90 people were arrested in Spain in connection with a network distributing child pornography.
