Microsoft plans to ship 32-bit, x64 and Itanium versions of its Longhorn server operating system, company executives said this week.

Microsoft had earlier committed to shipping both 32-bit and x64 versions of the Longhorn client but had not shared a full list of hardware platforms it would support with the server version of the operating system, due in 2007. Last week, Windows chief Jim Allchin said a final decision had not been made on a 32-bit version of the server.

Tech giants explore ‘hybrid’ DVDs

Technology giants Toshiba and Sony are in talks to come up with a compromise on the next generation of DVD format.

The two have been pushing different formats which has so far split movie studios and technology firms.

Toshiba, with NEC and Sanyo, is promoting the HD-DVD format, while Sony’s Blu-ray technology is backed by a group including Dell and Samsung.

Both want to avoid a format war. The next generation of DVDs will store much more, including high-definition video.

Toshiba said a single “hybrid” format would be better for people and it said it would aim for that as a compromise.

Sony is reportedly pushing Blu-ray’s disc structure and HD-DVD software technology as a hybrid solution.

Toshiba wants to use HD-DVD’s disc structure, which is closer to that of DVDs now, and use Sony’s multi-layer data recording technology.

Blu-ray discs can store 50GB of high-quality data, while Toshiba’s HD-DVD can hold 30GB.

AMD to release dual-core server chips

Intel may have come out with dual-core processors a few days earlier, but Advanced Micro Devices says it is bringing out dual-core chips to the market where it counts.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker will release its first three dual-core Opteron processors for servers Wednesday and follow it up with three more server chips and a desktop line during the next two months.

Although desktop buyers will inevitably consume the performance that dual-core chips can provide, server customers will be able to use the performance almost immediately. Several applications and operating systems have already been retrofitted for running on dual-processor systems. Hewlett-Packard, IBM and others will insert the dual-core Opterons into servers.

Along with the release of its dual-core server chip, AMD today has announced the imminent availability of dual-core chips aimed at desktops and notebooks.
