Microsoft Will Not Fix New IE Spoof Threat

In response to recent spoof advisory by Secunia.com, the report describes the scenario of multiple, overlapping browser windows, some of which contain no indications of their origin. An attacker could arrange windows in such a way as to trick users into thinking that an unidentified dialog or pop-up window is trustworthy when it is in fact fraudulent.

However in Microsoft Security Advisory (902333) the software giant stated that “This is an example of how current standard Web browser functionality could be used in phishing attempts.?, hence Microsoft will not issue a security update to address this threat.

* Update: Due to a typo the word not was dropped by mistake: “Microsoft will not issue a security update”

AMD expands its mobile processor product line with a new flagship model. The ML-40 is clocked at 2.2 GHz and targets thin and light notebooks.

The company claims it is bringing “a new level of performance for highly mobile business professionals” with its latest Turion 64 processor. The chip ups the clock speed of the prior fastest Turion chip ML-37 from 2.0 to 2.2 GHz. The processor integrates 1 MByte of L2 cache, theoretically leaving space for a future ML-38 or ML-39 with 512 MByte cache.

Microchip Pioneer Jack Kilby Dies at 81

Microchip pioneer Jack Kilby, who won the 2000 Nobel Prize for co-inventing the integrated circuits that ushered in the digital age of personal computers, cell phones and the Internet, has died after a brief battle with cancer. He was 81.

In 1958, during his first year working with Texas Instruments Inc. in Dallas, Kilby used borrowed equipment to build the first integrated circuit. All the components were fabricated in a single piece of semiconductor material half the size of a paper clip.

“In my opinion, there are only a handful of people whose works have truly transformed the world and the way we live in it — Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and Jack Kilby,” TI Chairman Tom Engibous said in a statement Tuesday.

Workaround For Sony’s CD Copy Protection

A simple mechanical way for Windows users to defeat SunnComm’s MediaMaxx copy protection scheme, used widely in audio CDs produced by Sony BMG, is being offered on request via e-mail by SunnComm itself, the company’s vice president of marketing and sales, Scott Stoegbauer, told Tom’s Hardware Guide today.

The scheme was developed by SunnComm through its MediaMaxx division in order to prevent listeners on Windows-based PCs from easily making copies of audio CD-based music as MP3 files. Other software currently produced by SunnComm does enable legitimate copies to be made in Windows Media format (WMV), which cannot be (easily) burned to CD.

Google Confirms Developing Online Payment

Web search leader Google Inc. is developing an online payment system but not a direct rival to eBay Inc.’s PayPal, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said on Tuesday.

Schmidt spoke after several days of heated speculation over reports that Google was working on a potential rival to PayPal, eBay’s popular online payment system.

Schmidt said Google does not intend to offer a “person-to-person stored-value payments system” like PayPal’s, in which money briefly resides in PayPal’s control during the transaction, but he did not give details of how the Google system would differ.

“The payment services we are working on are a natural evolution of Google’s existing online products and advertising programs, which today connect millions of consumers and advertisers,” Schmidt told Reuters in a brief telephone interview in which he declined to elaborate.

“We believe that e-commerce can be improved and we are working on ways to improve the user experience,” Schmidt said.

The company declined to say when a product would be available.
