Cancer Resistant Mouse Provides Possible Cure

White blood cells from a strain of cancer-resistant mice cured advanced cancers in ordinary laboratory mice, researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine reported today.

“Even highly aggressive forms of malignancy with extremely large tumors were eradicated,” Zheng Cui, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues reported in this week’s on-line edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The transplanted white blood cells not only killed existing cancers, but also protected normal mice from what should have been lethal doses of highly aggressive new cancers.

pple Computer Inc. could negotiate new deals with record labels and artists to sidestep French government plans to open the copy-protection technology of its iTunes music service to rivals, under a draft Senate amendment to be voted on this week.

Apple and Sony could continue to refuse to share their FairPlay and ATRAC3 file formats, provided they obtain the authorization of artists and other copyright holders whose music they sell online, said Valerie Aumage, an online copyright specialist with Paris law firm Dubarry Le Douarin Veil.

“As long as Apple can show that the restrictions conform to the wishes of copyright holders, there would be no case to answer,” she said.

New Phishing Attack Against Clients of SouthTrust Bank

Panda Software Labs have detected a phishing attack against clients of SouthTrust bank. The international PandaLabs network has already registered numerous incidents worldwide related to this attack.

The e-mail message used in this new phishing attack pretends to come from those in charge of security at SouthTrust. It claims that, due to certain security checks, users should go to a certain Web page and enter their confidential details.

Those responsible for this attack are using several Internet domains to host these false Web pages — each with several IP addresses in different geographical locations.

Utilizing a JavaScript function, the cybercriminals deceive users by displaying SouthTrust’s web site address in the browser bar.

“Using several domains to host spoofed web pages makes it more difficult to disable them,” explains Luis Corrons, director of Panda Software Labs. “As a general rule, users should never enter confidential data, regardless of the reason given in the e-mail message.”

USPTO to Use Peer to Patent Program

The US Patent and Trademark Office has been getting praise for officially launching the Peer to Patent program — the purpose of Peer to Patent is to find patents that have been issued for already made products or items that don’t properly qualify for a patent. Because the USPTO usually does not have the manpower and time to thoroughly check every patent that comes into the office, many are unjustly rubber stamped. A New York law school helped develop the Peer to Patent program that will help ease the workload of “underpaid and overwhelmed” patent examiners. The program will officially begin on May 12.
