Bulgarian police bust major European web pirates

Bulgarian police charged two men on Saturday for illegally distributing music and films in what officials called one of Europe’s largest Internet pirate groups.

They arrested an administrator and systems operator for putting download links to 20 million songs — or roughly 3 million albums — and hundreds of films on the web site www.arenabg.com, one of Bulgaria’s most popular pages.

Cisco Vulnerability in the VPN Client Software

The Cisco VPN Client for Windows is affected by a local privilege escalation vulnerability that allows non-privileged users to gain administrative privileges.

A user needs to authenticate and start an interactive Windows session to be able to exploit this vulnerability.

Cisco has made free software available to address this vulnerability for affected customers.

FBI probes hacking incident at Us Weekly

The FBI searched the home of a paparazzi agency’s co-owner to determine whether someone tried to hack into the computers of the gossip magazine Us Weekly, it was reported Friday.

FBI agents on Tuesday seized at least one computer while searching Jill Ishkanian’s home in the Topanga Canyon area, her spokesman, Glenn Feldman, told the Los Angeles Times.

He said the FBI took Ishkanian’s computer to see whether it had been used to access Us Weekly records and promised to return it.

Ishkanian, 41, is a former West Coast editor of Us Weekly. She left the magazine to form Sunset Photo and News with two other investors.

Microsoft’s OneCare to Go Live Thursday

Microsoft will complete its entry into the desktop security market next week with the general release of its Windows Live OneCare antivirus software.

OneCare, which also includes backup and PC-tuning software, has been available for free in beta form since November, but as of next Thursday customers will be able to purchase the final, supported product, according to sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans.

OneCare will cost $49.95 per year, which will cover licenses for as many as three
Windows XP PCs.

Microsoft bug-checking tools promise fewer crashes

Microsoft is readying two tools to help hardware makers create more stable and secure Windows drivers, which should help reduce the number of crashes.

The tools, PreFast for Drivers and Static Driver Verifier, are source code analysis tools that find common flaws in driver source code, so they can be fixed.

Winamp 5.22 Update Crushes Bugs

According to version 5.22’s release notes posted to the Nullsoft site, the update fixes 26 flaws in the music player.
