OpenOffice.org has been increasing in both popularity and visibility over the past several months. Version 2.0 has added a number of new features to bring it closer to feature parity with Microsoft Office, and it also offers full support for the Open Document format. However, a report just released by the French Ministry of Defense says that it still falls short of Microsoft’s office suite in one important area: security.

The classified report follows a one-year study by the Ministry comparing the popular open-source suite to its commercial competitor. The researchers found that OpenOffice.org was more susceptible to certain attacks, including those made via macros.

Microsoft Acquires Winternals Software

Microsoft Corp. today announced the acquisition of Winternals Software LP, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas, that provides Windows-based enterprises with systems recovery and data protection solutions in addition to offering a freeware tools Web site called Sysinternals. The addition of Winternals is a significant advance in Microsoft’s promise to lower customers’ total cost of ownership of the Microsoft Windows platform. Customers will be able to continue building on Sysinternals’ advanced utilities, technical information and source code for utilities related to Windows. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

On a personal note, I think that it would be wise for people to download all of Sysinternals utilities now because I believe that at some point Microsoft will require you to run WGA in order to download these great tools, and if you are like me that runs a perfectly legal Windows XP, but refuse to run WGA, you’d better act now.

Apple to announce movie rentals next month?

The Mac Pro may not be the only thing Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveils at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference next month: he’ll pull the rabbit of iTunes Music Store movie downloads out of his hat too, one Apple-watching website claims.

It’s not exactly a developer-centric announcement, of course, but with all the press Microsoft’s would-be iPod whacker, Zune, is getting, it’s undoubtedly something Apple wants out as soon as possible.
