Check Point announced the launch of its highly-anticipated ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0.

This latest version includes a new award-winning antivirus engine that detects and removes a wider variety of threats with hourly signature updates to ensure that users have the industry’s most rapid and effective protection against emerging attacks. More robust anti-spyware provides an additional layer of defense against blended threats. And ZoneAlarm’s innovative OSFirewall – the only firewall-based proactive prevention feature in a suite today – has been updated with new malware blocking capabilities, stopping spyware, rootkits, keyloggers and more from ever infecting a user’s PC.

A new Auto-Learn mode automatically configures security settings based on the user’s unique PC environment and behavior, making ZoneAlarm even easier for new users by greatly reducing the number of alerts a user may experience.

3 Teens Arrested in Beating Shown Online

A 13-year-old whose videotaped beating was posted widely on the Internet thought she was meeting another teenager at school to resolve a love triangle but instead was attacked, police said.

Three girls, two 14-year-olds and a 13-year-old, were arrested Tuesday on charges of juvenile delinquency with an underlying charge of attempted assault for the Dec. 18 attack at a school yard, said Suffolk County police Lt. Robert Edwards.

“It was a beef over a mutual interest in a boy,” Edwards said. “They agreed to meet, but I don’t think the victim realized it was going to be a fight.”

Authorities said the girl was dragged by her hair and kicked and punched in the head. In the video, which was posted on Web sites including YouTube and MySpace, screaming can be heard as the victim cowers on the ground. Several others look on without intervening as she attempts to kick back but is overpowered.

Apple plans to open up protected music and movies content bought from the iTunes Store , Tech.co.uk has learned.

The iPod maker is expected to make two announcements this week - the first will be to allow streaming of protected AAC content via USB; the second will be to licence its Fairplay DRM to the company’s Made For iPod licencees.

This will have the effect of enabling you to play songs bought from the iTunes Store through third party devices like hi-fis using digital connections. It may also mean that devices like iPod docks will be able to display more information - artwork and other track info, for example - which is stored alongside the protected audio.

Symantec unveils SONAR to find zero-day attacks

Starting next month, users of Symantec’s Norton products will have a new tool to help them avoid unpatched software flaws.

Called the Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response (SONAR), the new security software will look at the behavior of programs running on the computer in order to decide whether they are malicious. This is a departure from Symantec’s traditional signature-based antivirus protection techniques, which compare the program’s code to a database of known malware.

SONAR will be a free add-on to Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus 2007 and Norton Internet Security 2007 products, said Ed Kim, director of product management with Symantec’s consumer business unit.

Beijing announces database to nab marriage cheats

China’s capital has announced a new marriage database to catch out bigamists in an increasingly mobile society prone to nuptial double-dealers, state media reported on Wednesday.

Beijing’s current marriage registration procedure is “quite simple”, needing only an official identity card and local residence pass from would-be spouses, the Xinhua news agency reported, quoting a city official.

“This failed to stop the use of fake documents by fraudsters,” the report noted. “Meanwhile, some people who had already married in other places married again in Beijing.”

The report gave no details of the number of bigamists and marital swindlers caught among the country’s 1.3 billion people.

But in China’s increasingly fluid society, it is becoming easier for citizens to lose themselves — and their spouses.

Seagate ships ‘world’s fastest’ hard drive

Seagate has introduced what it claims is the world’s fastest hard drive: a 15,000rpm, 2.5in 3Gbps Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) job designed for servers and enterprise-oriented storage systems. The company also pitched the part’s low power consumption and high reliability.

The Savvio 15K has a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 1.6m hours, Seagate said, adding that means companies need 20 per cent fewer drives than they might otherwise have done with 3.5in drives. That means lower over-time costs, Seagate claimed.

It also said the new Savvios consume two-thirds of the power of 3.5in 15,000rpm drives and sport a seek time that’s 12 per cent faster.

IE 7 reaches 100 million users

More than 100 million people have installed Internet Explorer 7, making it the second most used browser in the U.S., trailing only its predecessor–IE 6, the software maker said Friday.

“I’m pleased to report that on January 8, we had the 100 millionth IE7 installation,” Microsoft Group Program Manager Tony Chor said on the IE blog. “However, even more important than installations is usage. According to WebSideStory (the company we use to measure browser usage), as of this week, over 25 percent of all visitors to Web sites in the U.S. were using IE7, making IE7 the second most used browser after IE6.”
