Apple plugs eight QuickTime holes

Apple on Monday released updates to its QuickTime media player software to repair eight serious security vulnerabilities.

The vulnerabilities expose both Macs and Windows PCs to cyberattack, Apple said in a security alert. In all cases, an attacker could craft a malicious file which, when opened with QuickTime, could give the miscreant full control over a computer running the software, Apple said.

The problems lie in the way QuickTime handles a number of formats. The security updates repair problems in the way the software handles QuickTime, MIDI, 3GP, PICT and QTIF files, according to the Apple alert.

Adobe Systems plans to launch Creative Suite 3 later this month, marking the largest software release in the company’s 25-year history.

Creative Suite 3, an overhaul of its publishing applications, is scheduled for introduction on March 27, the company confirmed in a blog posting on Monday. The software will begin shipping in the spring.

CS3 will offer the capability for developers to design dynamic frames that automatically format images. A number of CS3 features and suite configurations, however, will not be disclosed until the product’s launch, Adobe said.

Scientists trying To Read Minds

At a laboratory in Germany, volunteers slide into a donut-shaped MRI machine and perform simple tasks, such as deciding whether to add or subtract two numbers, or choosing which of two buttons to press.

They have no inkling that scientists in the next room are trying to read their minds - using a brain scan to figure out their intention before it is turned into action.

In the past, scientists had been able to detect decisions about making physical movements before those movements appeared. But researchers at Berlin’s Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience claim they have now, for the first time, identified people’s decisions about how they would later do a high-level mental activity - in this case, adding versus subtracting.

While still in its initial stages, the techniques may eventually have wide-ranging implications for everything from criminal interrogations to airline security checks. And that alarms some ethicists who fear the technology could one day be abused by authorities, marketers, or employers.

Hacker steals election data from Le Pen

A hacker stole sensitive data from a computer in the offices of French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, police said, fuelling his fears that rivals used it to try and keep him out of the presidential race.

The security breach at Le Pen’s National Front party headquarters comes as the campaign intensified ahead of the April and May election with several candidates facing smear scandals in recent weeks.

Le Pen, who shocked France by finishing second in the 2002 presidential election, is struggling to secure the backing of at least 500 elected officials needed to run this time round.

He says he has been the target of a well-prepared offensive to persuade the officials, including mayors, not to sign and asked police to open an investigation after suspecting that a mole might have leaked the names of his potential backers.

After a visit to the headquarters of his National Front party on Friday, the police said the list of officials who had agreed to back Le Pen had been stolen by a hacker.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has turned to IBM Corp. to introduce a new video search system and provide support in other technology areas such as content distribution and rights management.

Under a partnership announced Monday, the BBC will introduce IBM’s video search system, code-named “Marvel,” which is designed to analyze images and video, and categorize the content based on appearance.

The U.K. public broadcaster plans to offer the new video search service initially for users of its CBeebies and CBBC children’s Web sites.

Video search technology is becoming a hot topic as numerous Web sites expand beyond their traditionally text-based content to video, creating the need for users to be able to find videos and movies more easily.
