Photoshop Plug-in Supports Google Service

Adobe has teamed-up with Google to jointly announce a new plug-in for Photoshop CS3 Extended that links the software up with Google 3D Warehouse.

The solution lets Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended users query and download free 3D content from the Google 3D Warehouse.

The Google 3D Warehouse is a free Google service which allows anyone to search for and download 3D models and content using a browser. Users can also submit and share their own models.

The 3D Content then can be placed, manipulated and used in composites with the new 3D tools in Photoshop CS3 Extended.

A humanoid robot that reacts to touch and sound in the way that a baby does debuted Friday with its developers hoping it will aid research into how humans grow. The saucer-eyed 1.3-meter-high robot “CB2″ is fitted with about 200 sensors, miniature cameras and a microphone under a silicon skin.

In a demonstration at Osaka University, the air-powered robot developed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency rolled over, turned its face in the direction of a human voice and rapidly moved its eyes. The 33-kilogram humanoid can also form words as it is fitted with an artificial vocal cord.

Google Prey to Attack Via Firefox Extension Auto-Upgrade

A security researcher has found a remote vulnerability in the upgrade mechanism in the Firefox extension used by Google Toolbar and Google Browser Sync that could lead to a man-in-the-middle attack and covert installation of malicious software.

Christopher Soghoian, a graduate student at Indiana University’s School of Informatics, discovered that an attacker can silently slip malicious software onto computers via an upgrade mechanism flaw in the latest versions of highly popular Firefox extensions, including Google Toolbar, Google Browser Sync, Yahoo Toolbar, Del.icio.us Extension, Facebook Toolbar, AOL Toolbar, Ask.com Toolbar, LinkedIn Browser Toolbar, Netcraft Anti-Phishing Toolbar and PhishTank SiteChecker.

Writing in his blog on May 30, Soghoian noted that users of the Google Pack suite are likely vulnerable, given that it includes the Google Toolbar for Firefox. Using the bug, an attacker can install software such as spyware, hijack e-banking sessions, steal e-mail or send e-mail spam.

The only way to secure the upgrade path for sites hosting extensions and their updates is to use SSL technology. For the most part, he said, those sites with an “S” in their URLs are safe, such as in Mozilla’s free hosting service for open-source extensions: https://addons.mozilla.org.

Egypt Frees Muslim Brotherhood Blogger

A Muslim Brotherhood blogger was released Saturday after a 45-day detention, but the crackdown against the group continued, with 51 Brotherhood members arrested in recent days, police said.

Abdel Moneim Mahmoud, 27, a well known blogger and correspondent for the London-based Al-Hewar Arabic TV Channel, and 23 others, mostly students, had been held since mid-April for being members of the banned group. The fellow detainees were also released Saturday, said the police, speaking on customary condition of anonymity.

Mahmoud’s release came amid a continued government crackdown against the Brotherhood in the lead up to June elections for the upper house of Parliament, known as the Shura Council, that will include candidates from the group.
