Hello. I tried to run scandisk in windows xp pro sp2 to check for errors and it said that it could only run at next startup so I agreed and restarted but when it started the scandisk sayd: cannot open volume for direct acces and stopped. The problem now is that every time I start windows the scandisk runs and worst it always shows the same error. Is there anything I could do?
Also I wanted to do the scan because my computer is getting really slow, sometimes it hangs for minutes, so I applied several antispy and antimalware, defrag, antivirus, cleaning, etc but everything turned clean and OK so I suspect it is not because malware: I have a centrino 2GHz with 1Gb RAM, 2 partitions with 70% free in each one. The only programs at startup is the antivirus (bitdefender 10) and an ATI software, I start the firewall (zone alarm) after startup but sometimes it takes up to 6 minutes to startup, the applications stall and even it says that there is no network when there is.
Could you help me? |

1. did you try to use chkdsk /f instead of scandisk ?
2. Sometimes firewall and antivirus programs don't play nice together. Maybe you are running two AV programs, or AV and anti spyware. These things are known to cause slowdowns as they compete to scan the same files.
3. go to start->run and type msconfig. Now look at all the services and programs that start up automatically, remove any unnecessary programs |
