Neowin.net reports, inquisitive Neowin member Tom Servo, taking a que from member CarlNewton tried to connect to talk.google.com using his Trillian client.

What he got was a secure XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, alternatively known as Jabber) server waiting for connections.

Another hint on the preparation of Google is pointing the browser to talk.google.com will cause google server to redirect the browser to http://www.google.com/talk/ (currently the page does not exist), but all the signes are there for a new tool soon to be released by the search giant.

Update: Report by eWeek says that Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users, the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

If confirmed, the combined computer text and voice-calling service would put Google in competition with a similar service pioneered by Skype, which has attracted tens of millions of users, especially in Europe, to its own service.
