Embracing the AI Revolution: Introducing the xEngineer at Wix

At Wix, we've always believed in pushing the boundaries of what's possible. From empowering millions of users worldwide to build stunning websites without code, to continuously evolving our platform behind the scenes, innovation is in our DNA. Today, we're excited to share a bold step forward in how we engineer the future driven by the transformative power of AI.

The AI revolution is fundamentally reshaping software development. It's not just about faster coding or incremental efficiencies; it's a structural shift that allows us to move quicker, eliminate unnecessary handoffs, and rethink traditional boundaries between roles and technology stacks. At Wix Engineering, we're not waiting for the industry to catch up, we're choosing to lead.

That's why we're unifying our Frontend, Backend, and Mobile engineering guilds into a single, powerful Engineering Guild. This isn't about overlaying AI on top of existing processes. It's about reimagining the engineering role itself for an AI-native world.

Meet the xEngineer: The AI-Native Engineer

We call this new archetype the xEngineer, a design-first engineer who leverages AI as an integral part of every workflow, while maintaining deep expertise in a core stack or product domain.

The xEngineer isn't a "full-stack generalist" in the traditional sense. They're a specialist amplified by AI: fluent enough across systems to own outcomes end-to-end, with a sharp focus on system design, interfaces, user flows, and high-level decisions. Syntax and frameworks take a backseat; architecture, quality, security, scalability, and reliability move to the forefront.

In practice, an xEngineer:

- Owns features and systems from concept to production, regardless of stack boundaries.

- Uses AI proficiently across the entire development lifecycle: from planning and design to implementation, testing, refactoring, and maintenance.

- Designs AI-powered products thoughtfully, balancing code with large language models for optimal results.

- Brings deep domain expertise (e.g., in Commerce, Authentication, or a specific stack like frontend, backend, mobile, or data).

This shift reflects our North Star: AI will generate the majority of production code, freeing engineers to focus on what truly drives impact; software design, architectural thinking, and building robust, scalable systems.

Why Now? Breaking Down Silos in an AI-Driven World

Traditional guild structures made sense in a pre-AI era, where deep specialization in a single stack was essential. But AI changes the game. It reduces the friction of working across stacks, making end-to-end ownership not just possible, but preferable.

By unifying into one Engineering Guild, we're creating a shared foundation that:

- Standardizes best practices for AI tooling, IDE integration, and development environments.

- Streamlines build, test, and deploy pipelines across all stacks.

- Lowers barriers to contribution, enabling faster iteration, fewer dependencies and hand-offs.

- Enforces consistent standards for quality, security, performance, and reliability.

The guild's mission is clear: dramatically improve the development experience for humans and AI agents alike, accelerating full adoption of AI-driven development at scale.

This evolution extends beyond frontend, backend, and mobile. Roles like Product, UX, QA, Data Engineering will also transform as AI becomes embedded in how we build and operate. We're approaching this holistically, learning and adapting as we go.

The Path Forward: Learning, Experimenting, Iterating

Becoming AI-native doesn't happen overnight. We're investing heavily in education and enablement to support our engineers every step of the way:

1. AI-First Training – Mastering context-driven development, smart prompting for production systems, AI-assisted refactoring and reviews, and working with advanced agents.

2. Cross-Stack Fluency – Onboarding programs to understand constraints and paradigms across stacks, without needing to master every framework.

3. Learn by Doing – Real-world tasks with end-to-end ownership, supported by AI tools and reviewed through design and quality lenses.

4. Continuous Education Tracks – Covering software engineering fundamentals, effective AI usage, hybrid AI+code system design, stack paradigms under the hood, and deep dives to preserve and grow specialized expertise.

Tooling, processes, and operating models are still evolving, we're building this intentionally, responsibly, and iteratively based on real feedback and results.

Looking Ahead

This is more than an organizational change. It's Wix's commitment to building the next generation of engineering ahead of the curve. By embracing AI as a core teammate, we're positioning ourselves and our engineers to deliver higher-quality products faster, with greater ownership and impact.

We're excited to share this journey publicly because we believe the broader engineering community can learn from it, just as we're learning from the rapid advancements in AI every day. The road ahead is uncharted at our scale, but that's exactly why we're stepping forward now.

Welcome to the era of the xEngineer.
